Frequently asked
questions

Here are our most commonly asked questions. If you still have questions or want more information on the services we offer, do not hesitate to reach out.

How do I know if I am legally homeless?

You may be legally homeless if:

  • You have no legal right to live in accommodation anywhere in the world.
  • You cannot get into your home, for example, because your landlord has locked you out.
  • It’s not reasonable to stay in your home, for example, if you’re at risk of violence or abuse.
  • You are forced to live apart from your family or the people you normally live with because there’s no suitable accommodation for you.
  • You are living in very poor conditions, such as overcrowding.

I am homeless or at risk of becoming homeless in the UK. What do I do?

In England, your council must help if you’re legally homeless or will become homeless within 8 weeks. Help may include advice, emergency housing or longer-term housing. Contact your local council or check our Get Support page for more information about help in the Borough of Telford & Wrekin.

What causes people to become homeless?

Homelessness is a hugely complex problem. It is often caused by multiple interconnected issues in somebody’s life, including poverty, housing issues, poor mental health, domestic abuse, substance misuse, childhood trauma, neurodiversity challenges, unemployment, illness, bereavement, and relationship breakdowns, to name a few.

At Stay, we have a person-centred approach to our services – providing a safe and secure place to call home to those with a support need whilst providing the help they need to overcome their personal challenges.

What items are most needed by homeless charities?

Sleeping bags, hats, gloves, socks and personal hygiene items like toothpaste, toothbrushes, period products, shower gel, shampoo and first aid kits are always needed. Old mobile phones with chargers are great too, as we give them to people to access help and services.

Our tenants often arrive at their supported accommodation with nothing. Bedding sets, towels, cleaning products and non-perishable food (tins, packets of rice or noodles, biscuits, etc.) are gratefully received, also.

What can I donate that will help Stay and people facing homelessness?

Monetary donations are extremely important. By donating even a small amount to Stay, you will be directly helping local people experiencing or facing homelessness.

You can also donate gifts, which saves us from spending funds which can be used elsewhere. Please see the above question: What items are most needed by homeless charities?

Or you can donate your time or expertise by volunteering.

How can I donate to help people experiencing homelessness?

Donating is really easy – you can make a one-off donation or sign up to regular giving by joining our group of Stay Friends.
